Tiny House Coverage

Published by TeamInsuranceBrokers on June 25 2017

Attracted by a simpler lifestyle, reducing one’s own environmental footprint and the prospect of financial freedom, Canadians are re-thinking their requirements for housing and buying tiny houses.  Tiny homes are the newest housing trend to sweep our nation.

A tiny house is a residential home under 500 square feet which contains a living area, sleeping loft, kitchen and bathroom. Some tiny houses are entirely self- contained and off-grid, generating their own water, and electricity.

To qualify for Tiny House insurance coverage, a tiny house must meet a unique set of guidelines. They must be:

  • Permanently parked and skirted on a permanent foundation that meets local and provincial building guidelines – some tiny homes are similar to park model trailers and can be towed off the lot and moved from one year to the next.
  • Built to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z240 certification or a related standard
  • Built in a factory – not constructed at home or from a kit.
  • Homes of structurally-sound construction built to applicable CSA standards that ensure the home’s stability over time.
