Tips To Protect Your Home From Water Damage

Published by TeamInsuranceBrokers on April 06 2017

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada “From 2009 to 2014, insured losses from catastrophic events were close to or above $1 billion each year – most of this was due to water damage”

In order to reduce the risk of water damage to your home, consider the following tips

  1. Install a sump pump to remove water from your sump basin.Adding a battery backup will ensure the sump pump continues to work in the event of a power outage.

  2. A mainline backwater valve will help prevent basement flooding and sewer lines from backing up into your home.Check with your local municipal authority for availability of rebates or installation incentives.

  3. Check sump pump and backwater valve at least once a year to ensure they are working properly.

  4. Install a water alarm to detect water build-up in your sump pump.

  5. Extend downspouts a minimum of 4’ – 6’ from your home to keep water from accumulating near the foundation.

  6. Clean eavestroughs and downspouts of leaves, moss and other debris to permit water to flow freely.

  7. Avoid pouring fats, oils and grease down household drains as they will congeal causing your pipes to clog.

  8. Avoid storing valuable items and important documents in the basement, consider moving them to an upper floor.

  9. Install covered window wells around all windows that are below grade. This will prevent water from pooling in the window well.

  10. Ensure yard is landscaped to draw water away from your home.

  11. Inspect your roof’s shingles regularly and replace any that are missing or worn.

  12. Inspect hoses on appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines and replace any that are cracked, loose or worn out.

Even after taking all the preventative measures possible, water damage can still happen.
